UV Radiation
The sun emits ultraviolet radiation, color radiation, and infrared radiation. There are three major types of UV radiation from least harmful to most harmful: UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. UV-C radiation is for the most part filtered out by the ozone layer of the atmosphere. However UV-A and UV-B radiation still reaches earth's surface.
UV radiation causes significant damage to certain structures of the eye. It can cause uncomfortable scar tissue that can grow on the surface of the eye and become inflammed. It leads to cataract and some studies suggest it may contribute to increased risk for macular degeneration and other retinal diseases.
You can imagine the damage UV light does if you consider what the sun does to a piece of plastic left out in your back yard. The color fades and soon the plastic becomes brittle.
The difference between cheap drugstore glasses is primarily in the spectrum of UV light the lens protects you from. Drug store lenses are also usually cheap plastic that diminishes the visual potential of the eye by causing distortions and reflections. Good quality sunglasses have the full spectrum of UV protection, including the more harmful UV-B radiation, and also have anti-reflection on the back surface and good quality CR-39 plastic or polycarbonate lenses that provide optimal optics. Even "polarized" drug store sunglasses provide only a portion of the polarization that higher quality sunglasses provide.
We carry RayBan, Maui Jim, and Kaenon sunglasses that provide optimal protection from the sun, and outstanding optics. We also have designer sunglasses like Vogue, D&G, Ed Hardy and others. Any quality frame can be made into a high quality sunglass lens with the full range of UV protection, polarization, back-side antireflection, and CR-39 or polycarbonate lenses. We presently offer a 50% discount on a second pair of glasses. Right now might be your opportunity to finally give your eyes the protection and vision they deserve!
